FAQ

What time does camp start? Arrive at camp between 3:00-5:00pm on Monday for full weeks of camp. Family Camp check-in time is between 9:00-11:00am.

What time does camp end? Campers must be picked up by 11:30 am, but we invite all parents and leaders to join us for the closing program in Hunt Hall Auditorium which begins at 10:30am on Saturday.

Can my camper room with her friend? Cabins are assigned by age. We try to honor cabin mate requests submitted during the registration process as closely as possible. We can put up to three campers from the same church or family together. Requests to house four or more friends together in one cabin will not be honored. We have learned from many years of experience that campers benefit from meeting new people and making new friends. If two campers of different ages request to room together, the pair is placed in a cabin according to the age of the youngest camper. Younger campers will not be moved to older camper cabins.

Can I room with my friend if we request different tracks? Cabins are assigned by age. We do our best to honor cabin requests. You can choose different tracks and still be cabin mates.

How do I get to CrossRoads? CrossRoads is located in Lowesville, Virginia which is in Amherst County. We are between Lynchburg and Charlottesville off of Route 29. Click here for directions. Please do not attempt to use MapQuest or other Internet direction services. These websites often provide incorrect directions to CrossRoads. If you need further assistance with directions, call our office at 434.277.8465.

How far are you from ________? Travel time from Lynchburg or Charlottesville is approximately one hour. We are about 1 ½ hours from Roanoke and 2 ½ hours from Richmond.

Does my camper need to have finished fourth grade? To be eligible to attend camp alone, campers must have finished fourth grade OR be at least 10 years old by June 1st. Absolutely no exceptions to this policy will be granted. Younger campers are welcome to attend CrossRoads with a parent or parent substitute during one of our Family Camps.

How much money do I send with my camper? Campers will be able to donate to the camp missions offering in support of a designated ministry. Campers also have an opportunity to visit the canteen (camp store) Tuesday through Friday. Most chips are $.50, most candies are $.75, most ice cream treats are $1.00, and most bottled drinks are $1.00. Gifts range from about $1.00 to $10.00. $20-$30 is plenty to send for most campers. All money will be turned in to the camp bank at check-in. The campers will be able to “debit” money from their account each day. Unspent money will be returned to the camper on the last day of camp.

How can I contact my campers during camp? You may send mail to them by using the following address: CrossRoads, (Camper’s Name), 2247 Little Piney Rd., Lowesville, VA, 22967. You can also write to your campers by e-mailing them at campers@crossroadsccc.com. Please put their first and last name in the subject line. Phone calls during camp are not allowed.

Where will my camper sleep? Campers sleep in unit buildings that are divided into four separate rooms or “cabins”. There are two upstairs cabins and two downstairs cabins. Each cabin has a combination of bunk beds and single beds and sleeps up to 14 campers. Bathroom facilities are located inside each cabin.

Is there a Nurse on the premises during Camp? There is always a Registered Nurse who stays on the premises during Summer Camp.  If your child has any medication, you can drop it off with her during Check-In.

How is the camp food? Providing kid-friendly, healthy, delicious meals is a priority at CrossRoads. Our Food Services Manager, Cody Barton, has a degree in Culinary Arts from The International School of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Colorado. Many campers mention the food as one of their favorite parts of camp at the end of the week! Campers are encouraged to try everything, but options are always available in the unlikely event that they cannot find something they like to eat at a certain meal.  If your camper has a particular allergy or special dietary need, please be sure to include this on your registration form.  You may also choose to call (434.277.8465) and discuss a camper’s dietary needs with the Food Service Manager at least one week in advance.  Campers who require a special diet may be asked to bring some of their own food.

Do I need to send adult chaperones? CrossRoads is fully staffed with trained counselors and other leaders. Unlike some other camp programs, campers attend full weeks at CrossRoads without adult chaperones*. This type of program encourages independence and challenges campers to try new things. We do allow adult volunteers , but these helpers are housed separately from campers. *Note: Campers that attend during Family Camp must be accompanied by an adult.

What does my camper need to bring? Everything you need to bring and a few things we request you to leave at home you can be found on our Camper Packing List download here.

What if my camper leaves something at camp? Call CrossRoads (434.277.8465) as soon as you realize it is missing. If it has been found, we will mail it to you, but you must pay packing and shipping fees. Lost and found items are only kept for two weeks.

Can you be an LIT at Family Camp? The LIT program is offered for all weeks except for Family Camp. LIT’s must be 14 years old by the time they attend camp.

What if my camper misses home? (We try not to use the traditional “H-word” at camp. You know, the one that starts with “home” and ends in “–ness”!) We know that missing home can be a very natural feeling for many campers on their first (or even second or third) trip to camp. It is okay to miss home, but we don’t want these feelings to consume the camper’s entire camp experience.

Here are a few things you can do to ensure that your camper’s thoughts of home will not negatively affect her overall camp experience:

  • Talk positively about the week at camp in the weeks leading up to it.
  • Minimize the conversations about how much you will miss your camper.
  • Let your camper “practice” spending a night or two away from home if she has not already.
  • Allow your camper to talk about things that are making her anxious about camp, and provide her with strategies to deal with these anxieties.
  • Send stationary and stamps with your camper so that she can write letters home.
  • Send your camper mail during the week.
  • Pray for your camper!

Here are a few things we will do:

  • Keep your camper involved and active throughout the day.
  • Provide your camper with options at meal time to ensure he is eating enough.
  • Allow your camper to talk with a counselor or other adult about his feelings and give him strategies to try.
  • Encourage your camper to write a letter home about what is happening at camp.
  • Pray with your camper.

If your camper has feelings that persist and are holding him back from participating, our next step is usually for a staff member to call you. We like to gather ideas from parents about how to encourage their children…you know them best!

We need to cancel our registration. Will we get a refund? There is a non-refundable $25.00 registration processing fee. All cancellations must be received in writing three weeks prior to your scheduled camp week for a partial refund. After this time, no refunds will be given except in the case of severe illness or death in the immediate family. Names of campers may be substituted, but notification of the change must be made before opening day.
